Descriptions
Frosty Wren Studios builds interactive physics simulations, games, and the procedural engines behind them. Its Frosty Wren Labs exhibits render black holes, pulsars and relativistic flight from first principles, live in the browser. Its first game, Defense of Kyrath, launched on Steam in June 2026.
Frosty Wren Studios is an independent studio in the Pacific Northwest, founded in 2026 by Jason Smart. It builds interactive physics simulations, games, and the software engines behind them, and shows how each one works.
Frosty Wren Labs is a collection of astrophysics simulations calculated from the underlying physics and rendered on the GPU in the browser: a ray-traced black hole, a pulsar seen through its own gravity, gravitational microlensing of real planet events, and the view from near light speed. Each is verified against independent reference code. Defense of Kyrath, a whimsical fantasy tower defense game, launched on Steam in June 2026; its art comes from TiGen, the studio’s procedural 2D tile and sprite generator. Kiln, a procedural 3D asset pipeline, builds models, characters, animation and music from declarative JSON recipes. The studio builds with AI-assisted development and custom procedural tooling.
Founder
Jason Smart is the founder of Frosty Wren Studios, which builds interactive physics simulations, games, and the procedural engines behind them. A PhD physicist (biophysics, UC San Diego) and software engineer, his career spans physics simulations on supercomputers, bioinformatics, search, algorithmic trading, pharmaceutical research, and large-scale engineering at Google and Meta. He lives in the Pacific Northwest.

The studio’s work includes Frosty Wren Labs, a collection of astrophysics simulations calculated from first principles and verified against independent code; Defense of Kyrath, a fantasy tower defense game that launched on Steam in June 2026; and the procedural engines behind them, TiGen and Kiln. AI-assisted development is the studio’s primary method, applied to the simulations, the game, the engines and the website.
He holds a PhD in physics (biophysics, UC San Diego). His career spans theoretical physics simulations on vector supercomputers, bioinformatics during the human genome era, early search technology at A9.com (Amazon), a co-founded hedge fund trading algorithmic options strategies, pharmaceutical research and biostatistics at Johnson & Johnson, twelve years at Google (Search and Cloud), and AI evaluation and benchmarking on Meta’s Applied AI team. He lives in the Pacific Northwest.

Frosty Wren Labs
Interactive astrophysics exhibits, calculated from the underlying physics and rendered live on the GPU in the browser. Visitors change the parameters, switch each effect on and off, and read the method, the tests and the references. Each simulation is verified against an independent reference implementation.
Image use: images made with the simulators are free to use for any purpose, with credit, for example “Black hole simulation: Frosty Wren Studios, frostywren.com/black-hole”. Each exhibit page has more figures, and every view can be saved from the simulator itself.

Defend Thy Realm Against the Foe.
Defense of Kyrath is a lighthearted fantasy tower defense game set in a thousand-year-old realm besieged by a relentless foe. Place wardens, marshal archers, and hold the line across a compass-rose campaign spanning five hand-crafted biomes, then climb The Folly, a 20-tier roguelike ascent mode.

Tools
A procedural 3D asset pipeline. Declarative JSON recipes compile deterministically into game-ready glTF 2.0: props, furnished buildings, whole towns, rigged and animated characters, and music. More →
A procedural 2D tile and sprite generator: noise functions become autotile sheets, environment sprites and level layouts. 42 generators, 776 assets, the art behind Defense of Kyrath. More →
